The Mellow Tones is DESA’s Jazz vocal ensemble, founded in 2013 by Marc Meadows, and passed down to the current director, Taylor Young, in 2019. The Mellow Tones, named after Duke Ellington’s 1930 composition, “In a Mellow Tone”, is the only jazz vocal ensemble at Ellington, as the vocal department only offers classical music as an area of study. Students of the ensemble get the unique opportunity to explore jazz through intricate arrangements of popular tunes and jazz standards. They are exposed to concepts such as jazz harmony, theory, and jazz improvisation. Since its inception, The Mellow tones have performed all over the DC and Maryland area at venues such as The Kennedy Center and NPR. The Mellow Tones have also performed at several Universities in the area, such as Georgetown University, George Washington University, and Howard university. The ensemble has also shared the stage with Afro Blue, a highly acclaimed jazz vocal ensemble, based at Howard University. Mellow tones have also been specially requested and featured on CNN as a part of the nationwide broadcast, celebrating the graduating class of 2020. Students apart of the MellowTones learn to sing and perform the art form of jazz while building an appreciation that will stay with them for years to come.
