Vincent Garcia-Hettinger & Yang Gao

Vincent and Yang Gao will perform Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A minor and Haydn’s concerto in D major.

“The Schumann Concerto is a piece that has been a large part of my life since my childhood, and it is the reason I still play the cello. It’s a very sacred piece for me, and it holds a special, warm place in my heart. Haydn’s D major concerto is a much fresher, and newer piece for me, and learning it has been filled with joy, excitement, and discomfort. I intend to show two different sound worlds that completely contrast in style in character, but unite in their ability to show the singing, human, introspective aspect of the Cello” says Vincent Garcia.-Hettinger

At age 20, Vincent Garcia-Hettinger was appointed Associate Principal cello of the Baltimore Symphony. Vincent Garcia-Hettinger was a student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with Peter Wiley, Gary Hoffman, Yumi Kendall, Nick Canellakis, Christine Lee. Vincent began his cello studies at the age of five, and he made his solo debut with the San Antonio Symphony at age 13. Under the tutelage of Ken Freudigman, he was a prize winner in the International Klein competition and Sphinx Competition at age 17. At age 18, he was invited to the Ravinia Steans Music Institute and the Perlman Chamber music Program. Vincent is also a passionate teacher, and is thrilled to be teaching at Peabody’s Preparatory Division.

Born on 5 March 1998, Yang Gao began studying piano at age four. He received his B.M. in piano performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music under Awadagin Pratt, and M.M. in piano performance from the Mannes School of Music under Vladimir Feltsman. He is currently pursuing his D.M.A. in piano at the Peabody Conservatory of Music with HieYon Choi. He has won 1st prize at the 2023 Harrison Winter Piano Competition and received the 2022 Gilmore Piano Festival scholarship. He has also received The Steinway Award from the Mannes School of Music as well as The Denes & Mary Agay Piano and Composition Scholarship from the Peabody Institute.
