Sun May 4
Video game music is being heard by gamers and music lovers all over the world. Performed by symphony orchestras and jazz groups alike, the inventive pieces are composed by musicians from countries such as Japan, the U.S., the U.K. and Finland.
On May, Ravita Jazz will share their topical program, "Video Game Music: the Sonic Edge." In a free Sunday afternoon concert for adults and families, gamers of all ages will have an opportunity to enjoy some of the best gaming music ever written. Featuring leading musicians from Maryland and Washington, D.C., the band Ravita Jazz and guest saxophonist Herb Scott will be onstage. They love the music and you will too!
Of course, game music is already popular with gamers. This show allows them to hear musical compositions from their favorite games in their entirety - so they can fully appreciate the unique melodies and rhythms and changes in key and tempo. For non-gamers it’s a fascinating introduction to a new genre whose composers include musicians trained in multiple genres such as classical music, jazz, funk, pop, rock and Latin styles - elements that show up in gaming tunes.
Among the pop tunes are the “Angry Birds Theme” and “Kokiri Forest” from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. On the jazzier side are the Kendo composition “Overworld” from Super Mario World and “Rainbow Road” a composition from Super Mario Cart 8. This is just a sample. There is more in store.
The family friendly concert is hosted by Eastport United Methodist Church in partnership with Annapolis Jazz & Roots. EUMC is a beautiful venue with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and wheelchair access. Free and convenient on site parking is available in back of the church.
