John Lamkin II and The Favorites Jazz Quintet channel the spirit of those gritty hard bop outfits from the 60s through 80s, like Miles Davis quintets or Art Blakey and Horace Silver crews, without the retro cosplay. They pull originals from their recent CDs Transitions and Movin, blending in Latin grooves, rock edges, fusion weirdness, smooth jazz chill, funk slaps, and even a hip-hop nod, as if jazz needed more family drama to stay interesting.
The idea is straightforward tunes that work for the dancer bopping casually, the jazz buff dissecting solos, or anyone who just wants solid sounds without pretense.
Don't miss this evening of jazz favorites.
