Ensemble Galilei with guests James Oxley and Ronn Mcfarlane

Combining the talents of some of the finest Early music and traditional music players in the world, Ensemble Galilei has been celebrating the Winter Solstice and Christmas with raucous, breathtakingly beautiful, hilarious (and glorious) performances for over thirty years. Their concerts are sought after gems. With Celtic harp, early winds, viola da gamba, banjo and bodhran, and here at An die Musik Live lutenist Ronn McFarlane and the masterful English tenor, James Oxley, this performance, on the solstice, will be magnificent.

The sheer brilliance of each member of Ensemble Galilei is extraordinary. Sue Richards is one of the finest Celtic harpers alive. Kathryn Montoya has played with Baroque Orchestras around the world and is one of the most sought-after early wind players in this country. Jackie Moran has been a founding member of some of the most legendary Irish bands on this continent (and others), and as a viola da gamba player, Maryland’s own Carolyn Surrick has toured more miles and played in more concert halls than any other player in the U.S.

This year, for the Winter Solstice, they will be joined by acclaimed lutenist, Ronn McFarlane and internationally renowned tenor, James Oxley (who will be flying in from Poland after just finishing work on an opera.)
Yes, they are virtuoso performers. Yes, they have toured and recorded and there are plenty of enthusiastic reviews of their work. But they bring to the stage a kind of intimacy and real joy in the musical process that is unparalleled. It is a marvelous and rare experience to see this group performing live in concert.
