Alto saxophonist Bobby Watson, one of the most acclaimed and beloved artists of the last 40+ years, returns to New York City and Smoke to lead a stellar quartet featuring some of his favorite collaborators: Pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Curtis Lundy, and drummer Victor Jones. All About Jazz describes Watson as “very intensely, echoing those powerful Kansas City sounds while moving forward through all the bebop and mainstream trends while maintaining his own consistent style.” Financial Times adds, “He lets notes linger seductively before darting off at warm and romantic angles, and his high-note riffs and speedy lines are steeped in the blues and serve an over-arching purpose.“ A mainstay of the Jazz Messengers in the late 1970s and early ’80s where he served as Blakely’s musical director, Watson would later form his landmark group Horizon with Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis. Most recently, he retired after a distinguished teaching career at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and with this gift of extra time, we can expect even more great music from Bobby Watson.
