Amina Figarova is a phenomenal Azerbajan-born, New York-based pianist and composer celebrating her new release Joy. Her sextet is fast developing an impressive reputation on the international scene. She has toured extensively, developing a tight-knit ensemble that, despite inevitable personnel changes, has attained a distinctive and inimitable voice by concentrating on all-original repertoire for almost 25 years. The Jazz Police reports, “This is a band that built its reputation playing original repertoire, each musician a powerful soloist in his or her own right; yet it is their signature interplay that moves the Amina Figarova Sextet above and beyond the vast majority of large chamber ensembles in modern jazz and places the pianist among the top echelon of composer/bandleaders…” Joy is a post-pandemic recording and is celebration of life, hope and new beginnings, featuring 10 original compositions written by Figarova for this incredible ensemble.
“… In our current jazz era, many musicians feel obligated to write their own material, even those who lack talent for it, Amina Figarova is a different story. People wait for her records to hear the latest inspirations of a magical composer/arranger…” Thomas Conrad, JazzTimes
