Kent Hickey

An Indianapolis native, Kent Hickey was born into a musical family and began playing the trumpet at age 12.  In 2019, Kent graduated from Butler University with a degree in jazz studies and additional studies in entrepreneurship and innovation.  At Butler, Kent was recognized as the most valuable jazz ensemble member for his junior and senior years.

As a promising young freelance trumpeter and educator in the Indianapolis area, Kent has studied with and been mentored by some of the scene's best including Allen Miller, Jen Siukola, and Matt Pivec. He has performed alongside jazz legends Pharez Whitted, Maria Schneider, Kurt Elling, Benny Golson, and Stefon Harris as a member of the Butler University Jazz Ensemble and served as principal trumpet of the Butler Wind Ensemble under the direction of Professor Michael Colburn.  Kent has worked as a trumpeter aboard Royal Caribbean cruise ships the past two summers.

In addition to his activity as a performer, Kent is also active in trumpet-related research. Recently, he presented The Key to Developing Ideas in the Hummel Trumpet Concerto at Butler University’s Undergraduate Research Conference in 2017 and his project The Staying Power of Bebop Trumpet Playing as a part of the 2017 Butler Summer Institute, the 2018 University of Indianapolis International Trumpet Guild Regional Conference, and the 2019 Jazz Education Network Annual Conference in Reno, NV.

In the Fall of 2019, Kent began work on a master’s degree in jazz studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, in addition to his playing and teaching in Indianapolis.  Through this, he has been fortunate to study trumpet and improvisation with John Raymond and composition and arranging with Brent Wallarab.  Kent is an active member of the Jazz Education Network.
