Lenny Robinson’s Exploration is Janelle Gill (piano), Michael Bowie (bass), Chris Barrick (vibes) and Lenny Robinson (drums). They are a collective of DMV based, world class musicians who have collaborated with some of the best known names in Jazz. A partial list would include Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Kenny Garrett, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stanley Turrentine, Lou Donaldson, Marlena Shaw, Ahmad Jamal, Joshua Redman, Freddie Hubbard, Nicholas Peyton and many others.

Janelle is unfortunately not going to be available for this performance but the great Cyrus Chestnut will be in the piano chair in her place. You do NOT want to miss this!!

The idea of Exploration is to choose an artist or theme and Explore all aspects of that artist or theme. This show is all about taking a deep dive into the late great Mallet artist Bobby Hutcherson; his compositions, his collaborations and his spirit of joy while performing. This promises to be an evening of some of his well known tunes (Little B’s Poem, Montara, Herzog, etc.), some more obscure tunes (Avis, One for Nini, Pompeian, etc.) and some of his collaborations with Harold Land, Herbie Hancock and Joe Chambers.

Some swing, some funk, some risk taking and some straight up grooving.

Lenny Robinson, Michael Bowie, Chris Barrick and Cyrus Chestnut play the music of Bobby Hutcherson. Doesn’t get much better than that!
