A Celebration of Black History Month

“History of Praise: A Gospel Concert” opens the 2026 season at Mainstay–Rock Hall on February 7 in celebration of Black History Month. From the fields of bondage to the campgrounds of revival, from humble churches to grand stages that echo in the revered halls of Broadway, gospel music has carried the voice of a people. It is a generational language of fortitude, born of struggle and lifted in triumph. Through its many forms, gospel reflects the soul’s deepest expression of faith. From the hushed power of the spiritual to the jubilant swing of sacred jazz, African American praise has always been more than music. It is resilience made audible, joy made visible, and the enduring sound of a people who, through every trial, choose to sing.

Led by Karen Somerville, together with Pastor Leon Frison and a company of gifted singers and musicians, History of Praise brings this powerful legacy to life in a riveting and immersive production. The program demonstrates each element of praise and worship in living sound, inviting the audience not only to witness history, but to participate in it. Through an ensemble of voices and instruments ranging from the acclaimed trio Sombarkin’ from spoken word to flute, the music swings with the rhythmic improvisation of blues and jazz, embodying the richness and vitality of gospel traditions long celebrated by artists such as Thomas Dorsey, Duke Ellington, The Williams Brothers, James Cleveland, and Aretha Franklin.

Together, these artists do more than perform music. They illuminate the language of resilience and joy, demonstrating how praise has carried generations forward. The featured cast includes Sombarkin’, vocalist Portia Turner, spoken word artist Judith Ann Kennard, and flutist Dejanee Jones. The concert begins at 7:30 PM, and tickets are $25 in advance. Early reservations are strongly encouraged, as this show is expected to draw a large and enthusiastic audience.

By attending this concert, you are not only enjoying a terrific night of music and celebration, you are also supporting The Mainstay’s mission to bring diverse, high-quality programming to our region, expand cultural access, and strengthen community through the arts.

Join us for a remarkable evening of music, history, and community as we celebrate the legacy and spirit that define Kent County.
