HIPPO
A Film by Mark H. Rapaport
Presented by One Man Army & Kinematics
"An unholy fusion of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and NAPOLEON DYNAMITE" - RogerEbert.com
Step into the surreal and darkly hilarious world of HIPPO, a bold new voice in indie cinema that’s equal parts heart-wrenching, hysterical, and horrifying. Written and directed by Mark H. Rapaport, HIPPO tells the story of a devout teenage girl with a love for classical music and Jesus, who finds herself locked in an increasingly absurd ideological war with her video game–addicted, chaos-worshipping stepbrother.
What begins as a familiar tale of familial tension quickly morphs into a fever dream of suburban dread, internet culture, and emotional disintegration. With razor-sharp humor and disarming sincerity, HIPPO examines how two radically different worldviews collide under one dysfunctional roof—and how love, grief, and power manifest when kids are left to raise themselves.
Visually inventive and narratively fearless, HIPPO has earned critical praise and audience acclaim on the festival circuit. Produced by David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, and Jody Hill at Rough House Pictures, the film had its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival and was named an IndieWire Critic’s Pick, with the outlet hailing it as “the darkest comedy released in 2024… and the year’s funniest.” David Gordon Green said “Hippo’s’ strange and dark humor is quintessential viewing and a wonderful reminder of why we all got into indie filmmaking in the first place — a brilliant feature debut.”
Presented by One Man Army & Kinematics, this exclusive screening brings HIPPO to the Triad Theater for one night only. Known for curating bold, visionary work that challenges the norm, this collaboration offers a night of cinema that’s as unsettling as it is unforgettable—suffused with chaotic energy, biting satire, and a raw emotional core.
To heighten the experience, guests can enjoy Buttercup’s Revenge, our signature cocktail inspired by one of HIPPO’s unforgettable lead characters. Sweet, sharp, and a little unhinged—just like the film—it’s the perfect prelude to a night of dark delights.
Whether you're drawn in by the religious overtones, the psychological sibling rivalry, or the wildly unpredictable humor, HIPPO promises a screening experience you won’t forget.
