A unique and groundbreaking take on Swedish folk melodies mixed with modern New York City Jazz. This is an exciting collaboration between some of the best musicians in New York, bringing melodies as old as 250 years back to life for the first time, live at the Blues Alley.
Oskar Stenmark Sextet and 45 Riots - In my ancestors’ footsteps. Oskar Stenmark has always been surrounded by music. Born and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden, he picked up the trumpet at an early age. Oskar’s musicality is traced back to 1762, making him the tenth generation in his family to perform. Oskar - a Yamaha artist - has a Master’s Degree from Manhattan School of Music and has collaborated with David Byrne, Living Colour and multiple GRAMMY award winner Maria Schneider Orchestra. Leading his trio, quartet and sextet, Oskar explores and develops the traditional melodies he inherited from his ancestors by fusing them together with the sounds of his new home – New York City. 45 Riots is a music collective, record label and serves as a hub where some of the most talented musicians in NYC perform and record a multitude of styles. The group has teamed up with Oskar for an exciting collaboration, breaking new ground by empowering Oskar’s legacy and bringing the ancient songs back to life. Adam Mason, bass player and the founder of 45 Riots, is constantly searching for new ways to improve the music scene, working tirelessly to connect artists with the audience through music. This concert is made possible through support from the Embassy of Sweden in Washington D.C.
