Winner of the Inaugural Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Voice Competition, vocalist and bandleader Alyssa Allgood returns to the Blues Alley to celebrate her new album "From Here". This powerful collection of original music positions Allgood amongst the most compelling singers in the modern jazz landscape.
Alyssa Allgood is a Chicago-based jazz vocalist, composer, arranger and educator who has been described as “assured and daring” by Downbeat Magazine and a “model of sophisticated song interpretation” by the Chicago Tribune. She brings a modern approach to the jazz tradition with her original compositions, captivating arrangements and lyrical focus of self-love and human connection.
Allgood's new album "From Here" (Next Records 2024) finds her reaching a new pinnacle of personal expression, emotional observation, and artistic achievement. Staying true to her jazz roots, Allgood goes where few singers dare with an album featuring 10 original songs, boldly celebrating the traditions of soulful storytelling, spontaneity, and improvisation. The album features internationally acclaimed musicians John Patitucci, Kendrick Scott, Geoffrey Keezer and Greg Ward. Her previous albums, “What Tomorrow Brings” (Cellar Music 2021), “Exactly Like You” (Cellar Music 2018), and “Out of the Blue” (Self-released 2016), garnered Allgood praise for her lyrical expression, instrumental approach, and accomplished scat and vocalese singing.
Wielding her instrument with extraordinary nuance and depth, Allgood has established herself as a leading voice in Chicago’s vibrant jazz scene and beyond. She has appeared at such distinguished venues as Jazz at Lincoln Center in Shanghai, Shadboldt Centre for the Arts in British Columbia, Birdland Jazz Club in New York, the Chicago Jazz Festival, Green Mill, Jazz Showcase and Winter’s Jazz Club in Chicago, Noce Jazz Club in Des Moines, the Jazz Estate in Milwaukee, and the Origin Jazz Series in Lexington. She won the Inaugural Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Voice Competition (2017) and the David Baker Memorial Scholarship through the Jazz Education Network (2022). She was also named Best Jazz Entertainer in the Chicago Music Awards (2019), a Luminarts Cultural Foundation Jazz Improvisation Fellow (2016), and a Semifinalist in the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition (2015), where she performed for a jury presided by jazz legend Al Jarreau.
