Hank Levy was privileged to have his former students to continue to want to play his music. As a group, they began to meet and practice on what became a regular basis and formed a group. Over time, they would unofficially refer to themselves as the Hank Levy Alumni Band.
Hank was always pleased when he had the opportunity to attend these rehearsals. He would offer advise and guidance, teach a bit here and there, and now and then, but was most honored when he could just sit back and enjoy his former students playing his music.
There was no need for formal incorporations or agreements while Hank was alive. If there was a question concerning Hank’s music, one could just ask Hank. Unfortunately, Hank could not stay with us forever. But he lives on in the love we have for his music. The Alumni Band continued to meet, rehearse and periodically performed in concerts all in an effort of love to keep Hank’s music alive.
Over the years since Hank has past, numerous administrative, personnel, copyright and financial questions have arisen and there was no formal or legal oversight of the copyright provisions that protect Hank Levy’s music and legacy.
While many of the Legacy Band members are former students and friends of Hank’s, they were in no position to formally or legally resolve questions concerning Hank’s estate and music. Especially since Hank’s music has attracted some of the best jazz musicians in the mid-Atlantic region to join the band.
Therefore, Hank Levy Jazz, LLC was created by Hank’s airs and estate representatives to protect Hank’s Legacy through the continued promotion of his music. Hank Levy Jazz, LLC is also positioned to legally resolve these administration, personnel, and logistic issues freeing the band to do what it does best, play Hank’s music.
Since Hank’s music has attracted some of the best jazz musicians in the mid-Atlantic region to join the band, Hank Levy Jazz had decided to change the name of the band to the Hank Levy Legacy Band and officially incorporated the group under its LLC umbrella in 2008. The Hank Levy Legacy Band continues to meet on a regular basis under the direction of Bernie Robier, Band Manager and periodically performs at public venues.
In 2014, Hank’s chart Whiplash was the featured music in the feature film of the same name promoted by Sony Classic Films and directed by Damien Chazelle which won three Academy Awards. You can find recordings from the Legacy Band version of Whiplash on iTunes and Amazon.
The Hank Levy Legacy Band thanks you for attending this performance.
