A visionary music-theatre epic, ‘Emperor’ examines humanity’s ambivalent relationship with Death, the survival of art and love against all odds, and final redemption. Czech composer Viktor Ullmann’s haunting opera has a compellingly satirical–often humorous–mixture of images and styles. Written in Terezien, the Nazi ‘model’ concentration camp for artists, its performance there was censored and Ullmann executed at Auschwitz. Nick Olcott directs. Stanley Thurston & Joe Walsh conduct.
