Direct from Toronto! Eclectic group features World Music and Gypsy Jazz for unique blend.
Back by popular demand, 3x JUNO (Canada’s Grammy) nominees and Billboard charting Sultans of String are set to raise the rafters (and funds!) with their much anticipated return to Nighttown.
The lads will be raising donations for the Outreach Foundation, the humanitarian arm of the Presbyterian Church, with ground operations in Syria and Lebanon to assist displaced children and their families.
This is also their 10th anniversary show, celebrating Sultans of String’s milestone decade of music-making.
Folk Radio UK recently described their music as “an enthralling, adventurous celebration of the power music has to transcend geographical and cultural boundaries, and Sultans of String wield that power with grace, eloquence and spirit.” Indeed their vinyl and digital release 10, is more than a global sonic tapestry. It is a musical promise that embraces differences while finding common ground across culture, land, and time. While the album treks across all kinds of musical terrain, the fertile soil beneath each track is fed by hope unhindered and freedom found.
At the core of the band’s sound is Queen’s Diamond Jubilee recipient Chris McKhool’s fiery fiddle, melded seamlessly with founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s (Jesse Cook) rumba rhythm. Together their musical synergy create Sultans of String’s signature sound – the intimate and playful relationship between violin and guitar.
The band’s US manager and acclaimed promoter Dave Wilkes (Bela Fleck, Emmylou Harris) states, "Over the decades, I’ve worked with numerous top ten and #1 Billboard artists. In all that time, I have not worked with composers more talented than McKhool and Laliberté from Sultans of String. Not only are they a superb writing team, they are also amazing arrangers and performers”.
Sultans of String have been criss-crossing North America for the last several years at many taste-making forums such as NYC’s Lincoln Center and the legendary Birdland, Boston’s Scullers and California’s hip music scene including the San Jose Jazz Festival. Sultans of String were filmed by MPBN’s Maine Arts! in a feature concert, and have performed live on BBC TV, BBC Radio, Irish National Radio, and the internationally syndicated shows WoodSongs, World Cafe, and on SiriusXM in Washington.
