Mark Lehner

Mark Lehner is an American archaeologist with more than 30 years of experience excavating in Egypt. He was born in North Dakota in 1950. His approach, as director of Ancient Egypt Research Associates (AERA), is to conduct interdisciplinary archaeological investigation. Every excavated object is examined by specialists to create an overall picture of an archaeological site—from the buildings down to the pollen spores. His international team currently runs the Giza Plateau Mapping Project, excavating and mapping the ancient city of the builders of the Giza pyramid complex, which dates to the fourth dynasty of Egypt. He discovered that Pyramid G1-a, one of the subsidiary pyramids of the Great Pyramid, belonged to Hetepheres I; it was originally thought to belong to Queen Meritites I.

Search for Khufu’s Palace – Digging the Giza Pyramid Builders

Mark Lehner will update on the latest results of the AERA team excavations at the Lost City of the Pyramids, Giza Egypt, and the search for the palace of Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid.

Excavations of the “city dump” on the western slope of Gebel el-Qibli (“Southern Mount”), above the Lost City, contained demolition debris from the city reorganization by Khafre, builder of the Second Giza Pyramid. Between 2004 and 2007 we excavated the back end of a huge Royal Administrative Building (RAB), most of which lies buried under a modern soccer field. In 2018 we found evidence the older city included a 4th Dynasty palace, which turned our attention back to the RAB. Could this be a palace of Khufu, Khafre’s predecessor?

AERA excavations now connect with the discovery by French archaeologists of papyrus documents from the time of Khufu. Although found at a port of Khufu at Wadi el-Jarf on the Red Sea, the papyri include log books of officials and team leaders’ during their work on building Khufu’s Great Pyramid, logbooks that mention the palace and city at Giza. During Season 2019 AERA team members continued to explore a huge backlog of cultural material from the city dump, with further evidence of the early phase. With the soccer field slated to be moved, in Season 2020 AERA will excavate deeper into the RAB, looking for further evidence of Khufu’s palace.
