How to Pitch an Idea to an Editor

Instructor: Katharine Shilcutt

Want to be a freelance writer, but not quite sure where to begin? The process of getting your writing published in magazines and journals starts with pitching a story idea to an editor via email. In this workshop we will find out how successful writers decide where to send their pitches, the components of a good pitch, and how writers who get published make their stories stand out from the crowd. Join the Managing Editor of Houstonia magazine for an insider’s view of what editors are looking for and how to craft a pitch that attracts an editor’s attention.

Recommended: Come to workshop with an idea and a magazine, journal, or a curated blog where you would like to see your idea published. Optional: Send us a pitch and/or the first page of the essay or article you seek to publish. The first six writers to send in their pitches and first pages will receive hands-on feedback from Katharine Shilcutt.
