Cross-Genre Writing Workshop
Instructor: Anis Shivani
Do you write in multiple genres? Have you considered how writing in different genres can support your growth as a writer? By working in more than one genre, we discover new tools and techniques that we can use to improve our writing. What can fiction writers learn from the techniques of poetry, and vice versa? Can elements of writing—such as exposition or characterization—benefit from fertilization across genres? This workshop is geared towards writers who specialize in one (or more!) genres, and want to take their writing to next level by gaining familiarity with other genres. We will explore select works of fiction, poetry, drama, screenplays, essays, and criticism, to understand how particular techniques are not limited to genre. Students will be encouraged to think of ways their ongoing writing projects can benefit from infusions of technique from other genres, and to establish a continuing practice of drawing inspiration from multiple sources. Writers of all genres are encouraged to attend this workshop.
