Writing for Magazines

Instructor: Katharine Shilcutt

Writing for magazines is fun, challenging, and often more lucrative than writing fiction. This is the reason many novelists choose to supplement their income by freelancing. If you've ever considered writing freelance pieces for magazines, this workshop will offer you practical advice to support your success. Katharine Shilcutt, the Features & Dining Editor for Houstonia Magazine, will share an insider's view of  the pitching, writing, submissions, and editing processes, as well as elucidate how magazine style differs from writing styles appropriate for other types of writing, such as newspaper articles, academic articles, and novels. She will provide examples of great magazine writing and explore what makes them great, then teach simple research methods that will set your submission ahead of the pack. She will reveal the meaning of crucial magazine lingo such as "nut graf" and "lede" to help you understand the way your potential editors think and what their needs are. She will examine the wide variety of pieces that magazines publish by focusing in particular on the pieces that Houstonia Magazine publishes.

If you have begun the process of querying agents or you plan to in the future, including publishing credentials to bolster your query letter makes a difference in how much attention your submission will receive from agents. Whether you would like to write for magazines full-time or as a way to broaden and strengthen your writing career, this workshop will open the door to the world of magazines and potentially help you find a way "in." As a bonus, Houstonia has invited registered writers to pitch an essay or article to their magazine within a two-month window following this workshop.
