Turning Points in the Arc of Memoir
Instructor: Joyce Boatright
You have a memoir—a life story—that you know needs to be written. But how? There is so much to tackle in crafting a memoir, no matter the length. Where do you begin? How do you shape a memory into a story that engages readers? How do you sustain their interest?
In this workshop, we will explore the important turning points in your life, so you can choose the one(s) that merit your attention. We’ll also examine the popular themes in memoir to help you publish/market your finished memoir, if you so desire. We’ll discuss memoir and truth, answering questions about whose truth is it? Finally, everyone will discover the natural arc (inner change) that comes from overcoming life’s challenges, which is so crucial in a credible memoir.
Participants will be given prompts that allow us to put the ideas we are discussing into practice, as well as have the opportunity to workshop a few pages of the first draft of a memoir during the second session.
