Telling Stories in First-Person Point-of-View
Instructor: Joshua Foster
What craft questions do we need to consider when we begin a story with "I"? In this workshop we will explore the fundamental techniques of first-person narration in fiction and nonfiction creative prose, in addition to other craft elements such as plot, structure, characterization, point-of-view, dialogue, and style. Sessions will include generative writing exercises, short lectures and discussions on various craft elements, and, most importantly, workshopping of story drafts. Our goal will be to workshop between 2-4 works-in-progress each week. While this course will refer to literary short stories and essays as models, participants may choose to submit any genre of prose writing, including but not limited to memoir, creative nonfiction, personal essay, science fiction, mystery, and young adult fiction.
