As one of the leaders of the indie soul movement (having released 4 CDs/2EPs/1 DVD), plus recording and/or touring with some of the biggest names in R&B, hip-hop and jazz (Whitney Houston, Meshell Ndegeocello, The Foreign Exchange, and countless others) it's no wonder Sy Smith has been dubbed by her peers as the "queen of underground soul". After 6 years of soul searching, touring with Grammy-winning trumpeter Chris Botti, and performing tributes to Ella Fitzgerald at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center and more, Sy has finally returned to her most beloved craft - a singer/songwriter/recording artist. And she's finally released her long-awaited 5th studio project - "Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete" - which she wrote & produced entirely herself. This project is already being hailed as one of the best of 2018, earning Soultracks.com highest rating of "Highly Recommended". SoulBounce says "There's not a bad track to be heard on Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete, a testament to Sy's command of her craft and her approach to her artistry." And music critic A. Scott Galloway says " Most impressively, Sy has gathered all of her experience and acquired expertise to compose, arrange, perform and produce all of these 9 songs and 3 interludes herself, even playing piano, keyboards and bass on several selections. The result is gentle eclectic, sensitive and soulful."
Sy Smith will perform songs from this new album plus fan favorites from her other projects, inspired covers and new standards. This is Sy's first solo set in Baltimore in more than 10 years and she's thrilled to return to Charm City!
