A young, up-and-coming jazz musician, Eliza Salem is a DMV native who learned her craft in the Washington area’s vibrant musical and cultural scene. Part of the next generation of jazz musicians, she is always working to expand her traditional and modern jazz repertoire and play outside of the box. Eliza aspires to be more than just a jazz drummer, but also an all-around musician; she studies piano and bass in order to bring more than rhythm to her drumming.
Eliza is among the rare but growing breed of female drummers. She works hard to bring her fellow young musicians into the jazz scene, and someday hopes to help create opportunities for women in jazz. She was selected as the Maryland All-State high school drummer in 2017, and was selected to perform in the Washington Women in Jazz Festival’s 2017 Young Artist Showcase. Eliza has studied and played with locally admired musicians, including Paul Carr, Chris Allen, and Jeff Antoniuk. She is currently studying with Michael Gould at the University of Michigan, where she is pursuing a degree in Jazz Studies, and playing regularly in Ann Arbor and the surrounding jazz scene. Eliza and her band will provide a chance to see some of the region’s brightest young jazz musicians in action.
