Announcing the debut album, "Journey Into Night," from the Baltimore-based Joshua Espinoza Trio. The trio's unique interpretations of pop hits are accompanied by Espinoza's haunting original compositions, with feet planted firmly between classical style and jazz improvisation. The album takes listeners from the rhythmic struts of Strayhorn's "Take the 'A' Train," to the laid back groove of the Beatles classic "In My Life," to the sweeping landscape of the American folksong "Shenandoah." On this, their debut album, the Joshua Espinoza Trio establishes their footprint as a chamber ensemble as much as a jazz trio, beckoning listeners to heed the invitation of the titular phrase and take a sonic Journey Into Night.
With a style that is tastefully modern yet firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, Baltimore pianist Joshua Espinoza blends and bends genres into original compositions and arrangements that are immediately relatable, yet hard to define. Recently, Joshua has performed alongside such notable artists as Warren Wolf, Dezron Douglas, Jerome Jennings, Paul Bollenback, Miho Hazama, Alex Norris, John D’earth, Mike Pope, Kris Funn, Brian Settles, Todd Marcus, and Chuck Redd. A finalist in the 2018 Ellis Marsalis International Jazz Piano Competition and current faculty member of the renowned Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, his playing has been heard on stages large and small including the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, The Kennedy Center, the Barns at Wolftrap, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the DC Jazz Festival.
