Sebastián de Urquiza was born in Boston (USA) in June 1992, but after one year he moved to Argentina, where he acquired Argentine citizenship. He holds a degree in “Musical Arts with a Specialization in Double Bass” from the National University of the Arts (UNA). On the other hand, he studied composition with Guillermo Klein and jazz with Juan Cruz de Urquiza. In 2016, he was awarded as “best new jazz artist of the year” and as one of the best double bass players in the country. In 2019, he was selected by the prestigious “Focusyear” to be part of the ’19/’20 band in Switzerland and play with some of the most important musicians in contemporary jazz. In 2022, he was a finalist in the prestigious UNISA competition, competing with double bass players from all over the world. In addition, he was one of the winners of the Herb Alpert Award for Young Composers granted by ASCAP with his suite “The Ordeal”, premiered in 2025. Since 2023 he has been a teacher at Carnegie Hall.
He has played with musicians such as Winard Harper, Guillermo Klein, Lex Korten, Rudy Royston, Leo Genovese, Vinicius Gomes, Kush Abadey, Yotam Silverstein, among others. As part of Focusyear, he also shared the stage with musicians such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jorge Rossy, Jeff Ballard, Ingrid Jensen, Anat Cohen, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Kendrick Scott, among others. He is a musician in constant motion who has played on many of the most important stages in New York, who tours Europe, and who has performed on the main stages of Argentina alongside prominent national musicians of the genre.
He has also been part of ensembles outside of jazz, such as the project “Manos a las obras”, directed by Elías Gurevich and Haydée Schvartz. He is also part of the La Quimera Ensemble, a Baroque ensemble led by lutenist Eduardo Egüez. He has also recorded with Residente.
As a composer, he has already recorded 7 albums: Fuera de Línea (2016), Fulgura (2019), Unity Vol. 1 (2021), Unity Vol. 2 (2022), Líneas Paralelas (2023), The Ordeal (2025), and Dos Orillas (2025).
