Clovers, Spaniels & Jewels

DC Street Corner Harmony  - The Clovers, The Spaniels and The Jewels

During the 1950s and 60s, Washington, DC was a hot bed for R&B and Doo-Wop music. Today, many groups that performed during that era continue to perform today taking audiences back to the "good old days" with their popular hit tunes.

The Clovers-

Founded by Harold Lucas, they began singing together in high school and signed with Atlantic Records in 1950, beginning the unbelievable string of fifteen number one hits on the Rhythm and Blues charts, influencing every vocal group that followed throughout the ensuing decades. The Clovers hits included "Love Potion #9", "Blue Velvet", and "Devil or Angel".  The Clovers have built a reputation as one of the most entertaining groups still around.  The Clovers® members are Johnny Mason, Steve Charles, Ron Reace, Antwon Drayton and Will Rawlings.

The Spaniels -

The Spaniels are an American R&B Doo-Wop group best known for the hit “Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight.” The original Spaniels debuted in 1952 in Gary, Indiana as Pookie Hudson and the Hudsonaires. They changed their name to the Spaniels and became one of the first artists to sign with Vee-Jay Records. The Spaniels recorded their first release “Baby It’s You” on May 5, 1953. The line-up changed numerous times over the years. Pookie Hudson formed a group of Spaniels from the Washington, DC area. Pookie Hudson passed away in Capitol Heights, Maryland on January 16, 2007 from a lengthy battle with cancer. Before his passing, his wish was for the Washington, DC group to continue in his name. The present members of the group are Wellington (Bay) Robinson, Steven Wade, James Ivy, James Faison and Lester (Earl) Wade.

The Jewels -

A powerhouse female group, The Jewels have been recording and performing for over 50 years.   The grouped formed while attending Roosevelt High School in Washington, DC in 1958.  While still in high school, they traveled to Chicago to record on the Checker label (a subsidiary of the famous Chess label). Their recordings included "Loaded With Goodies" and "Johnny Jealousy”. In 1963 the group released their first national hit "Opportunity" on the Dimensions label.  “Opportunity” stayed on the Billboard R&B charts for eleven weeks. In 1964, the Jewels were spotted by the “Godfather of Soul” James Brown during their performance at the Apollo Theater in New York.  Brown recruited the ladies to join the “James Brown Revue”. Today, the Jewels are now Sandra Bears, Grace Ruffin and Margie Clarke, all original members.
