Iva Ambush, Don Dillingham and Terry Koger Group

"Iva has a unique sense of phrasing." - Bro. Yusef Lateef Legendary reed player, composer, teacher

"Billie Holiday and Mabel Mercer are smiling down from heaven at you..." - Charles Ellison, Trumpeter International teacher and artist

"I'm passing you the baton to carry on my work...." - Ernie Andrews, jazz vocalist

"YEH!" he said and bowed as acknowledged and accompanied me through two songs. - Lester Bowie

Iva Ambush celebrates the birth of Ella Fitzgerald, a vocalist whose legacy and influence define a classic era of Jazz singing, with swinging music by the first popular music star.  Iva will be performing many of Ella’s danceable recordings.  Joining Iva for a little "Ella and Joe Williams" will be vocalist Don Dillingham.  Accompanying her will be Iva’s own  stellar rhythm section Baltimore’s Ambuscade, featuring The Terry Koger Quartet, including Terry Koger (alto sax), Justin Taylor (piano), John Leonard (bass), and Robert Shahid (drums).

Iva Ambush is a scat singing Jazz vocalist from Frederick, Maryland. Iva is currently working on her sophomore CD Mosaic Voices of Four Women which is a homage to Lena Horne, Fannie Lou Hamer, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Nina Simone, all of whom were obstructed in their professional careers by political attacks which they overcame, finding comfort in the great American classical music  Jazz.  In Summer 2017, Iva will celebrate Ella's swinging music with her centennial improvisation dance partners John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. Through music written by Monk and Dizzy, Ms. Iva will demonstrate the reason for the "First Lady of Song" still remaining the epitome of syncopation.

TERRY KOGER QUARTET

Band Leader Terry Koger, a native of Trenton, New Jersey, began his musical training at an early age on piano and later on alto saxophone. He also played clarinet and bassoon during his early training. His first Jazz instructor Thomas Grice was instrumental in his early training, teaching Terry about improvisation and the art of teaching music.  Terry graduated from Morgan State University with a BA in Music Education.  He also developed an interest in Black Music Research, studying the history of Black Music and the contributions of African Americans to the vast field of music.  Terry was mentored by significant scholars in the field such as Dr. Samuel A. Floyd, Dr. Eileen Southern, and Dr. Dominique Rene deLerma.  He has published works in the Black Music Research Journal and the Black Perspective in Music. Terry has been influenced by many saxophonists including Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderley, Jackie McLean, Johnny Griffin, Rashaan Roland Kirk and John Coltrane.   He continues to hone his craft in Jazz on piano, vocals and improvisation by attending the Vince Evans Jazz Workshop following the dynamic teachings of Jazz pianist Dr. Barry Harris.  The Terry Koger Group has been together for over ten years and includes some of the DMV’s greatest musicians.
