Martini Blu Jazz Cafe is proud to present BIG BAND SUNDAY NIGHTS!
Now folks, if smooth music will a little 'jump' in it is your fancy..." - Glenn Miller, 1941
"Don't you see? Clarinet lead... and I can harmonize it nice and tight, all in the same octave!" - James Stewart in The Glenn Miller Story, 1954
My name is Cary Richards and I'm the owner of Swing King Productions and the leader of the Cary Richards Orchestra. Leader? Yes. I also play trombone with it sometimes, sing, organize, write the music, manage the music library of over 1000 titles, Web Master of this website, Booking Agent, and still haul the equipment for gigs from time to time! If you have arrived at this website and you are looking for an authentic 17 piece Big Band that plays the original arrangements of Big Band Era hits, faithfully performed by dedicated musicians well-schooled in recreating those sounds, look no further!
The Big Band bug bit me deeply as a kid when I watched The Glenn Miller Story on TV late one night. When the junior high I was attending didn't have a big band that played swing music, I started my own. I lived in Bellaire, Texas and after a few false starts, I started my first professional big band in Houston in January 1983. Within six months, the Cary Richards Orchestra was working six night a week all over Houston! The formula has evolved over time, but the basic format has remained unchanged: This band plays for dancing; dance music from the 1930's and 40's - the music of the Swing Era. No Rock, Country, Hip Hop or Rap, just Swing and Jazz.
"It's such a wonderful sound to come into a room and hear a band play the way it should sound and [play] good dance music." - Frank Sinatra at a Tommy Dorsey Tribute Dinner, 1956
I also had a long career as a broadcast professional in radio that happened as a result of my big band work in Houston. It was radio that caused me to move to Dallas in the mid 1990's and it wasn't long before I started an even more successful band in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. From Houston to Dallas, the numbers of dates must by now be in the thousands in a myriad of venues around the world - hotels, nightclubs, supper clubs, country clubs, ballrooms, cruise ships, theaters, and concert halls. Then, in 2009 I stopped. I went back to school and earned my BA in Music Education, becoming certified to band, choir, orchestra, and general music in Texas public schools, and my first teaching job brought me back to Houston!
I am now teaching privately and I have started up a brand new big band here in Houston. From the rehearsals we have had thus far, I know this will be the best big band of my career and we look forward to appearing soon in a venue near you for your listening and dancing pleasure!

"It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that Swing!" - Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington, 1931
