An intimate concert on Nighttown's Secret Garden Patio.  Seating limited.

Celebrating over ten years of collaborating together, Berlin saxophonist/composer, Gebhard Ullmann and NYC trombonist/composer Steve Swell join two of Chicago's finest improvising musicians; Fred Lonborg-Holm, cello/electronics and percussionist Michael Zerang for this new configuration.  Building on the strength and ideals of those three cities the quartet creates enough fireworks to light up the night sky with their brilliant sound imagery. Ullmann/Swell's Chicago Plan thoroughly breaks new ground for what Jazz and New Music ensembles' approach to what creative music should be.

Steve Swell has toured and recorded with many artists, from mainstreamers such as Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich to so called outsiders including Anthony Braxton, Bill Dixon, Cecil Taylor and William Parker.  He has over 40 CDs as a leader or co-leader and is a featured artist on more than 100 other releases.  Steve was nominated for Trombonist of the Year 2008 & 2011 by the Jazz Journalists Association, was selected Trombonist of the Year 2008-2010. Steve has been selected by the Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll in the Trombone category each year from 2010-2015.

Gebhard Ullmann  is considered one of the leading personalities in both the Berlin and international music scenes and has received numerous awards for his work including the Julius Hemphill Composition Award in two categories ('99), the Deutsche Phonoakademie award ('83), one of the first SWF Jazz Awards ('87) and the nomination best-jazz-CD-of-the-year by the German Schallplattenkritik for his CD Tá Lam in 1995. His CDs Final Answer (2002) The Bigband Project (2004) New Basement Research (2008) News? No News! (2010) Mingus! (2011) Clarinet Trio 4 (2012) were all listed in Downbeat Magazine among the best CDs of those years. Since 2005 the Downbeat Critics Poll is listing him in the category rising star.

Fred Lonberg-Holm enjoys working with a wide variety of musicians in as many situations as possible. Current and ongoing projects include Stirrup (Charles Rumback and Nick Macri), Friction Brothers (w/ Michaels Colligan and Zerang), The Valentine Trio, The Boxhead Ensemble, ADA trio (w/ Peter Brötzmann and Paal Nilssen-Love), VCDC, The Fast Citizen’s, Ballister, Joe McPhee’s Survival Unit III, Easel and Screw and Straw, the Party Knüllers as well as numerous one off projects.?
