Brian Perez is a saxophone and woodwind performer, educator, and composer residing in Houston Texas. He performs regularly with the Conrad Johnson Jazz Orchestra and the Houston Jazz Orchestra as well as with his own projects. He also serves as Director of the Jazz Ensembles, and woodwinds at Texas Southern University.
Perez’s performing and compositional style is fresh and diverse, rooted in tradition, but looking forward to new developments in music. Perez’s music moves toward a cross-pollination of styles and the deterioration of concrete definitions of genres and his compositional & performance style reflects these elements of his environment. As a solo artist he has performed nationally and internationally including Barcelona & Madrid Spain, Manizales Colombia & Caracas Venezuela.
Perez’s debut album Blues for the Current Status of Your 401k is a high-energy voyage that explores the depth of sound of his unique compositional and improvisational style. His voice maintains the lyrical iciness of his Minnesota roots combined with a more hard-edged and contemporary sound from some of his latest explorations. The music serves as a sonic tapestry of the individuals and encounters, sights and sounds of of his D.C. / Baltimore years.
