Stan Hillis is a retired cardiologist who has played music most of his life. He started doing professional jobs at age 15, when he joined the musicians'union. In college at Bloomington, Indiana, he played in the IU jazz band, where he met Booker T Jones. They were able to do many gigs in Bloomington and many other towns, notably at the Hubbub Club here in Indianapolis.
Stan met long time friend and mentor Steve Allee in the early 80s and has enjoyed making two jazz CDs with him, in addition to playing in the Bob and Tom band and twice at the Montreux jazz festival in Switzerland.
These days he enjoys playing flute at gatherings in friends' homes and on occasion at the Jazz Kitchen. No longer a member of the musicians' union, he is enjoying a truly amateur status.
